I found some cheerful vintage fabric this weekend, I'm wondering what to do with it?

It would make lovely cushions, or bags, or toys, or retro fairies.

This sort of fabric makes me happy!

On the flipside of design, I still seem to be making vintage inspired items at the moment.

The Easter pocket above has tea dyed lace, and a retro image sewn on the front.

And two more 'nests' with dear little Easter chicks.

Well it is already in the shops! I have been buying wrapped chocolate for using in photographs- any old excuse.

I have been making more little pockets.

The idea came from wanting keepsakes for the children. I don't know about you but I'm not keen on so much packaging on other eggs, and I tend to buy our children foil covered chocolate and make up something different.

I also need to make some cards.

I'm doing a 'pop up' shop in Stuart House in Liskeard from 12th - 17th of March if anyone can go!

I'm also finding other Easter bits. This ceramic rabbit was supposed to be taken to a sale last year, but it was only later I realised that my daughter had 'borrowed' it, and it was back at home!

I have been staring at a blank wall for a few days, it's really hard to choose special things when there are soooo many! I have made a start and I can show you what else I've been up to.

A rather sad looking wall, but I do like the Alexander Girard paper from Lagom

I have been making little Easter pockets to be filled with chocolate!!!

They will be available in my Folksy shop soon at £7.50 each.

They have vintage fabric 'inners' and a linen and calico printed outer piece.

I love the vintage images.

I love the little rabbits, speaking of which, we have five jumping free in the garden, which is a lovely distraction as we had to put our dog Pebbles to sleep a few days ago and I can't believe how empty the house feels.

Shrine to Family History.

As you probably realise,we don't do minimal in our house.Sentimental things are crammed into drawers until I feel like going through them. The time feels right to just keep special bits, and through inpiration on the internet, I have an idea of how to tackle the mountain.

I find the most difficult thing to go through are the childrens artwork and scribblings.

How do other people deal with the tide of things?

The above picture is in the book 'Ethnic Style' by Miranda Innes, and shows a 'shrine to family history'. I like this idea as a way of appreciating the fragments of history I have tucked away.

I have also been inspired by Dottie Angel's 'bits and bobs' wall below, I love this with my magpie tendencies.

I have my eye on a wall in our front room. Oh! I'm now informed it's for a large picture, and my 'bits' will have to go in the little studio. So be it!

I'll keep you posted, I have a few days off!!

I recently found a really cute donkey embroidery, and so had to put it in a heart!

A little Sunshine.

A bit of sun certainly lifts the spirits! I got round to baking yesterday, another little lift.

I even managed some rockcakes and froze some. It doesn't look like many! Oh yes -the children came home.

I have also done a little more painting work inspired by photos of work (!) Sounds confusing, but I find I bounce ideas from one media to another.

Maybe because of the sunshine I have been looking at things in the house. It does highlight the need to revamp and paint! Now the only thing is to persuade Dan to let the light in! A la Dottie Angel.

Big Sister doll.

A while ago I posted a picture of the Mimi Kirchner doll I made from the purl bee website, which I was really pleased with!

I have now made a big sister doll using my body pattern and Mimi Kirchner's embroidered face.

She needs a skirt of some kind , but I liked the way the boots came out.

I then started playing around with the other felt pieces I made which have given me some ideas for further work!

I have had a to do list for ....for ever and on it was - open Etsy shop for my jewellery. Well today I did! One to tick off the list, and now to get something in it!! This is next on the list.

Sewn treasures.

I know I have mentioned in the past that I tend to collect things, rather a lot of things against my good -de-cluttering intentions! I can't however give up buying stitched textiles. Here are a few of my latest finds.

A beautiful vase of flowers -sweet peas I think -embroidered onto linen. I will probably make a cushion with some lace from this.

And two embroidered people, both looking a bit cross. Not sure what to make with these yet.

I tend to stash fabrics away until I know what to do with them, a mega storage issue!

Finally I've been experimenting with photographing my dolls in different places.

When they are destined for a shop I try to make them clear but AREN'T THEY BORING!!

So I tried photographing them on a background which -to me - has much more potential.

When I am happy with the result the dolls will be in my folksy shop.

So stay tuned!

I have been quite busy recently, going with the flow which has led me to vintage textiles, dolls and patchwork baskets. I have got my folksy shop up and running again, although it was very slow, does anyone else find this? It needs filling! I have had a creative burst of energy and have made some new dolls and heart decorations, ready for valentines day.

The angel on the left is minus her arms and wings. Some of the fabrics are vintage and the others are from fabric rehab .

The other make was a little heart with embroidered birds, just right for valentines day!

I love the little birds (maybe singing loudly to eachother!)

The other thing that I have been meaning to do for ages, was to make the pink penguin fabric basket.

I made my own size, and I liked the way they go with my applique pictures, as I used the same fabric bundle.The handles are from my sons (never worn) belt, I knew it would be useful one day! That's a sure sign of a hoarder.

The baskets are lined, and I found the instuctions easy to follow- great for using up fabric scraps.
I have to go now to give the poor angel some arms and wings!

I have worked a little more on my paintings.As I said before, I find it really hard to know when to stop!

That's one of the great things about computers and digital cameras i.e. you can record it and look at your work afresh.

I love playing with the ideas that have been whirring round my head for years I'm not there yet but I'm enjoying the journey!

I know this is a bit late but I received a book for christmas illustrated by Jan Brett. Some of you may know her work. I love all the detail and the folky style of the decorations. If you have children, you may find a book between now and next christmas to read to them!

They inspire ideas for animals/birds with little scarves and coats.

Maybe if I start making now I might be ready for next christmas!

I like this time of year for reflecting on things. I concluded that I won't make any resolutions, but just go with the flow!

A very quick post before the children get home!

I tried another of someone elses patterns. This time it was a Tilda santa.

It's a pressie so shhhhh.

Made with a Scandinavian bundle from fabric rehab.

And a needlepoint (?) cushion with a lovely snowy theme.

I'm going to list it tomorrow in my shop at £15 if anyone needs a pressie!

Since making the Kirchner doll I was inspired by using the felt again and I have been trying to make a new pattern for a wolf inspired by my childhood book of little red riding hood.

I decided to try paper to get a better idea of the 3D pattern idea.

The one behind is hiding his rather skinny legs.

It didn't look much like a wolf , but I decided to see how the shape worked in pink felt -as I've got a lot of pink!

And I've ended up with piglet!

Back to the drawing board with a longer nose.

I have been making my own patterns for so long, I'd forgotten how using someone elses pattern can help you look at things in a different way. I recently tried Mimi Kirchner's felt doll pattern (below) from purlbee.I was surprised how robust the felt was when it was sewn by hand. I've used a machine before and it has ripped.

The instructions were very clear.

I loved doing all the details on the dress, but need a bit of practice on the face.

But I had no complaints from Eleanor.

I might try the other hairstyles!

I've been quite distracted recently with our pets,sometimes I feel like I'm on a farm- Which I love!

I have found a bit of time to move my workspace AGAIN so I stop using every surface in the house to work on.

I'm finishing off another still life.

A bit more stitching needed.

I've also started some work on mums and babies in applique - just trials drawn from family photographs, to see what happens.

I'm enjoying doing a bit of watercolour at the moment. It's inspired by - again- things that I like!

I love the old postcards showing various portraits.

Plus a little one of Dan my husband, over 20 years ago! looking out to sea from a bungalow right on the beach in Bracklesham Bay where he used to live. I've added a little copy of a Mary Fedden still life for good measure.

A quick note to say, I appreciate the lovely comments I still can't however leave any comments on my site (due to an imput error!?)still can't fix it.

Here I go with another post! I find my blogs echo my life -a creative flurry and then silence......another burst and then quiet again....

So here goes..

Here's a small section of my inspiration wall with copies of Mary Fedden, various postcards, and two little birds one from Zimbabwe sounds impressive but I bought it from the Liskeard Show! Also a felt picture from a Fowey craft fair (mybeadyeye)

I'm trying hard not to 'fill in ' the background as I love the space around the shapes, and feel that I ruin them after overdoing it.

My husband was tidying (or titying about as I was about to write) the loft, and came across some old work of mine. He thought I ought to post it for posterity.

It was a college project ( the late 1980's) for a design for the 'Strand Theatre' curtain, and I got through to the last three.

Sadly it wasn't chosen. Still looking on the good side we have one less paper thin thing in the loft.

At last the computer is fixed! I hope it lasts. Welcome to new followers, I hope you all had a restful summer. Now it's back to school and back to routine.

I had a good response at the homespun fair, I am making more jewellery at the moment, so not spending as much time sewing. I am also itching to make some more papier mache too , I have quite a bit of 'junk' stored for new work so need to use the bits up!

We went for a 'picture walk' this morning. I love rainy damp countryside and try and capture it on camera. We spotted some deer who obviously were wary of pebbles.

Then Pebbles met his match with some geese (bless them, but I really don't like geese!)

He made himself scarce pretty quickly.

So after a bit of fresh air it's back to beading!

I've been looking through an inspiring book 'Modern Vintage Style' by Emily Chalmers, and found an artist Nathalie Lete. I loved her eclectic home, full of her work and various other treasures. I like to see artists who, like me, use a wide range of media to express their ideas.

I am still getting things together for Saturday, and have turned my shopping off on my shop as I'm taking some pieces with me that are one off.

Felt Works.

I've been busy preparing for the Liskeard Show at Merrymeet. I've still got loads to do, pricing up takes ages. I've been working on a mum and baby doll out of felt.

It was based on this doll. It has ended up like a matroyshka shape. When I look at it now, although not intended, it reminds me of the recent lovely dolls on murgatroyd hoots so go over and take a peek at some lovely dolls and brooches..

My neck and arms are now hurting after a couple of hours of sewing these little brooches.(I didn't make them all in that time!)

Sorry it's a bit blurry!

They will be for sale in my shop soon. I've taken my things off Folksy as I've had no sales recently the words needle and haystack come to mind, and I'm not the best at networking! I don't know what experiences other people have had. I thought it best to concentrate on one shop at the mo and see what happens.

Vintage cushion.

I thought I was going to put a quick message and list an item on Folksy, but everything is taking forever!

I have finished one of the cushions from the 1950s barkcloth fabric, and when I succede in listing it it will be on Folksy.

On that note, thanks for the lovely comments recently- I have tried to add my comment, but I can't get it to register. Must be gremlins in the works.

Attic Dolls.

A quick post for Mary Ann to show the dolls belonging to the dresses!

It's an on-going process and I often swap things over. So at the moment they look like this.

She has a basic body shape with a painted face -which looks rather defiant!

The dress is made from antique lace and she has a little ceramic brooch in her hair.

The second attic doll also has a painted face lace dress and flower brooch, but has naive jointed limbs.

I painted red shoes on the first one (after the photo!) and I think the second doll needs boots or something.

I have been having brainstorming work sessions that never seem to end.

I'm working towards our local Liskeard show and the homespun fair in Portscatho in August, plus approaching more shops- it's all go.

Here are a couple of piccies of current projects I'm trying to finish.

Some felt brooches on the go.

Quite different, a little applique and painted hanging.

And the first of a little dolls dress for the dolls I've already made.

I'm still working on the patchwork, but haven't decided yet what to do with it. I'm torn between using it in the house for something, but the amount the fabric ends up costing I feel I should sell bits made -Help!

Half Term Over.

The children are back at school, so I can catch up on bits and bobs.

Over half term I held my breath whilst little Eleanor made cakes all on her own!

She was sooo exited- more to do with licking the bowl I think.

And as if by magic Jacob appeared, and as in the Little Red Hen 'helped' in the eating.

I also wanted to show a little piccy Eleanor copied from a painting her dad had done.

I've been very busy recently trying lots of different ideas. My brain is sometimes fit to explode unless I work through them. I've been buying charm packs of fabric to go with existing fabrics which will be made into bags I think.

I love the cloud nine leaf fabric from M is for make.

I'm using some charm packs for applique work about growing food.

That gets eaten by the birds!

I am trying to use canvases to streach work over (not streached yet)

Finally, I got some mini cards printed by moo, and was really pleased by the quality.

The slim shape fits the dolls really well.

Will show more new work soon!

Alexander Girard.

A while ago I bought some Alexander Girard dove and hand gift wrap from 'Lagom' which got a little squashed, but they kindly sent some more! I covered a little cupboard that was being chucked out, and now I just need somewhere to hang it.

Apologies to Mr Girard, but I had to chop his pattern till it was symetrical!

I made quite a few things in the last couple of weeks, mainly applique.

Including the start of a still life.

With a bit of help from the men.

Vintage Fabric.

I have been checking out the local charity shops for various bits and found this gorgeous 1950's fabric, so I took advantage of the sun and gave it a good wash!

It's a 1950's barkcloth design, and I think it would look great as cushions. I don't know if it would go with the style of my house, so I may sell the cushions when I've made them. Maybe I'll frame a little bit to keep - instead of redesigning the house!

Cornish Fairy Dolls. Padstow Fair.

At last I have finished my new fairy dolls. They are all handpainted and take a LONG time, but I am pleased with the finished ones so far! I'm also working on a similar shaped doll but using vintage fabrics so I'm keen to keep going.

They still have the cornish stripe tights. I have been trying to source a blue and white striped fabric like the cornishware ceramics with no luck - has anyone come across any?

She has little gingham wings. And lacey underwear!

And can be hung on the wall or perched on a dresser.

She will be in my shop soon.

On Saturday 23rd April there is a fair at the Metropole Hotel in Padstow from 10 - 5pm.

A friend from the jellypebbles group the gingham chicken will be selling delicious cakes and fudge (I know so!) in the garden and will have a few of jellypebbles things too. If you're anywhere near come and say hello!

New Internet Shop.

I have finally started my own internet shop which will be filled with applique, cornish fairy dolls, jewellery etc.
Take a peek and let me know if there is anything which isn't clear. It will be a gradual process to keep topping it up with new work, but I'm excited and relieved to start it.

Although it's raining, it feels cosy inside,and I'm able to look at photos of sunny days!

I'm a real novice in the garden. So I thought if I buy plants in flower throughout the year I'd end up with a garden with colour all year-in theory anyway.

In couldn't resist these auriculas.

Which are the most gorgeous colours and shapes -I can feel a little piccy coming on!

I'm still working on a new website and am working on new work to go in it.

It will have my jewellery.

It seems a while since I had time to blog! My little girl had her birthday, so I thought I have to MAKE something for her, maybe using the fabric she's had her eye on- 'little fawn sky' from fabric rehab.

She seemed to like it.

I did swear that I would NEVER make another deer as it was SO fiddly, and it was the first thing she took off the bag!

I am still working together with some other makers to form a group - we will be called 'jellypebbles' (no relation to my dog) and when our page is up and running you'll be the first to know. I am also trying to set up my own shop, so I'll be very busy!

The other thing I've been doing is plenty of applique, with images of gardens, chickens etc Here's a little preview.

I have to finish the edges of some of them possibly like the one below.

They are all handsewn continuing to be inspired by the embroiderer Janet Bolton.

Festival Doll.Vital Spark.

I have finished the stick doll for a little exhibition at 'Stuart House', Liskeard, Cornwall. The dates are March the 6th to March the 12th, 10am till 3pm. The exhibition is the result of the 'vital spark' project in Liskeard, including paintings, sculpture and embroidery by amateur and professional artists.

Here she- is minus bells which I've sewn on her dress. Bye for now!

A little post showing a few little ideas from recent work. I have really enjoyed a bit more painting in my sketchbook. I have also tried some ideas for dolls using fabric scraps.

Again inspired by Janet Bolton, some applique ideas and a rather flat lady- good as a bookmark though!

I'm also trying to complete a piece for Liskeard's 'vital spark', a collaboration between artists and dancers around the 'Fer Lyskerys' dance ( a dance for Liskeard!)

I thought about the literal side of processional fairs and festivals and moving dancers- even morris men(and ladies) and explored the idea of a doll which isn't static.

A doll for me that answers that is a 'poupard' doll - a doll on a stick which 'asks' to be picked up and twirled.

A calico base, and a twiggy stick.

Painted with acrylic, and dressed with scraps. She will have bells on after I've painted her face.

I can't believe it's coming up to my blog anniversary. So as is customary I would like to give away .....one of my cornish fairies.

She is handpainted and can be hung up by the ribbon.

I have had the odd creative moment, both weilding a paintbrush and a needle.

We had (found!)some useful frames which I primed and had a play with acrylic paints.

I tried a few ideas, but only liked this one(above).

This one got turned around to house an earlier applique. I was thinking along the lines of Julie Arkel where she uses box frames.

I am happier with another applique I started a while back. I tried some tea staining to bring the fabrics together.

It's not finished yet, but it revisits the 'memory' applique idea using some of my mums fabrics. I have ideas for dolls treated in an equally naive way.

I always seem to have lots of ideas for the new year. They don't always work out, but I can't help it! I try to review my work and move on. We are STILL throwing out and recycling things we don't want. For me it's a real tonic to thinking of new work, as I decide what I really like.
In the new year I hope to set up with a group of other cornish makers, so watch this space. I am debating whether to stay on Folksy, because it hasn't been very successful for me- but it may be a good outlet one day?
If you haven't done already, check out Cathy Cullis's 365 challenge on her website- on my task bar-I too would like to try and work every day on something creative.
In the new year I would like to work more on my papier mache, and make the dolls suitable for children i.e read my trading standards notes properly! Maybe make some clothes for them etc.

I feel that I haven't stopped to draw breath recently. I have now finished all fairs, have some time off work, and have felt a tinge of christmas spirit.
As a quick recap, we took part in Liskeard's Lights Up where we made lanterns which we took through the town before the lights went on. I always laugh when the tree goes on as the lights only ever start halfway up.

A few craft fairs and lots of cooking.

We like to think of Christmas as the winter festival, we love Carols and visit local churches searching for a meaning to all the madness! I'm not religious, but I love the memories of childhood christmas's and the story of the nativity. We are doing some work on the house which has meant -there is stuff and dust everywhere!
So sadly for the kids we don't have many decorations up.

I love the colours of Autumn, and lovely sunny chilly days. I seem to have been inspired by the earthy woody colours around for my latest brooches.

I also couldn't resist a tiny litchen green sock made by a friend.

I have been working flat out recently, I have an early morning job and my daughter has been ill off and on, and I don't seem to have any time for myself. On top of that, the critic of the house ( which needs a lot of cleaning) thinks it's not clean enough! So what do we do? We buy fabric.
And I feel better.
I've been making things for christmas sales, so here are a couple of pics showing my recent efforts.

I have now reinstated a baking day. I did get my food certificate recently and have already started baking for Fridays country market. I love the back to basics cooking, seasonal produce and no unnecessary ingredients of what was the W.I. ( I suddenly feel very old!) So here are my recent efforts.

I have also been working on ideas, some christmas - reluctantly. I do love christmas but the run up is getting rediculous.

St. Matthews Fair, Liskeard.

On Saturday the Piccy Tree that I was helping out on, had its first outing. The town had plenty of stalls, a funfair and a French market. I ended up helping out with my son in the procession holding a banner. The Piccy Trees were so colourful and every banner told a story about the area.

My applique panel and other colourful pieces made at local centres and schools.

We set off from the Liskerret centre (a hub of local activity!)with a fab samba band.

And ended up at the fair!

Also in town were members of the Sealed Knot, demonstating weapons and cooking from the time of the 1600's

I couldn't resist one more piccy of pumpkins - and pears, which I would love to develop into some sort of applique picture.

Also to follow up on a previous post. I have done a bit of work on a community project for a 'piccy tree' which is run by a local artist Sue Field, and is to record various thoughts about and sights of Liskeard in Cornwall to create applique panels which are hung on a structure.It can be worn for local events or hung up and displayed flat. I'll include some pictures after the start of October( its first outing!). I find it a really interesting idea and the project is envolving many people in the community who have never done any applique before and perhaps not much artwork at all.

I tried couching a thicker thread which I'd not done before and found it quite easy to do...

So I tried some more!

I'll show the whole panel when it's done.

I have been blackberrying -again and buing MORE fruit for jam and crumbles etc. I like to avoid buying pre packaged foods where I can, and so I like a well stocked larder ( food of course!)

Our computer had its first crash. Luckily my husband saved most of the photos, but we lost all our 'favourites'. It is however quite liberating to search the web again for more like minded people!
Whilst Dan spent DAYS putting on all the programmes, me and the kids went blackberrying and made lovely jam instead.

It's nearly halfway through the school holidays, and I'm feeling a little frazzled, but we've had some lovely days out, and some good days in too!

I am, as you can imagine a hoarder. I have however been chucking many things out recently,including a doll I made in brownies! he he.

I have also completed another garden doll.

A little bit of 'Orla' inspiration I think.

I have also finished the painted table which as usual, I'm not sure about but I think it's better than it was!

I have to do some work soon for a community project of a 'piccy tree' which is applique panels onto hoops which are worn for carnivals festivals etc

I am going to attempt a panel looking at the architecture of the town, hopefully find some unusual features!

I thought I'd show you a table I'm in the middle of painting. We hate to throw things out ( to a fault sometimes!) and we had an Ikea table that was worse for wear. It was actually thrown out by someone else- nothing like a freebe. So it does't matter if it works or not!

I like to draw first on paper, and the image is usually symetrical.

Some folky ladies appeared. I'll take another picture when it's finished.

I have at last finished some more felt dolls, which I'll post more on later.

I'm wondering if I should scent them?

The recent rainfall was good for the garden, the pumpkin has doubled in size. I think I might of put it in the wrong place! i.e it needs to be in a big field.

( It is now twice this size.oops!)

Collage Work.

I have been working on some collage pieces recently. I am still working through similar themes to previous work, and wanted to try an approach which gave more unexpected results, instead of a flat pool of colour as in the watercolours. Collage seems quite good for this. In time I will paint my own papers, but here are a few ideas so far.

A few sketchbook ideas resulted in a still life painting.

This gave me an idea to paint the things I love, but can't afford to buy! That could be a LOT of paintings.

Lastly, a collage which links back to my current dolls ideas.

Thinking that this lovely weather may end soon, I've been out in the garden making the most of it - and the sun keeps shining! (A special message for my Auntie Rita, thanks for the card mwah! and I am growing a few cornflowers in amongst all the other plants, a big bunch of which has been promised for a certain tree)

I have finished a few bits of work which I still need to photograph, but for now here are a couple of piccys of the garden.

Port Eliot and the Obby Oss

We recently visited Port Eliot in St Germans thanks to Murgatroyd at Serge & Tweed , who showed links about the travelling folk museum. The exhibits for this were rather small and they are wanting any donations for the folk museum or a possible venue visit museum of british folklore for more details. We saw this obby oss headress below, (I loved the curtains behind!)

So having visited for the exhibition, we had no pre-concieved ideas about the house. So it was a lovely surprise to look round a lived in house full of treasures, flaking paint and beautiful paintings (and some not) I'm not a great fan of Lenkiewicz and there is a beautiful round room (but it is) covered in his work.The house left me wanting to look at many more rooms as only a few are open. On the way out we met the Earl and countess of St Germans who were very friendly and 'roo' their gorgeous whippet dog- very civilised.

The other place we visited there was St Germans church where we took some picture of the embroideries and stained glass. Here are some which may inspire!

In case you are thinking I am either shopping or visiting somewhere I have been doing some work. Some felt ladies based on the images I've developed about the garden, water growth etc.

I have explored images about these for a while now. My first pieces were mosaics (excuse the awful picture)

So I'll say bye for now.

Just a quick post as I promised Shevie over at paperdolly that I would show my 'tat' that I bought recently.

A little bit tatty, but very useful (!?)

I feel like the shop on 'Bagpuss' giving homes to unwanted things (unwanted for a reason?)

A rather lovely box by the metal box company, full of old haberdashery labels and bits and bobs.

And lastly a saintly bracelet for 25p which shines like shell so it said "buy me".

So I am guilty of compulsive buying, and I don't want it to stop or life would be rather dull!

Here are a few of the things I've been up to recently on the creative front. I have tried to just enjoy experimenting with different techniques. I usually have to have some starting inspiration, so as I said in my last post I looked at the work of Janet Bolton and Ann Rothenstein. I love their simplicity - which as I know is really difficult to achieve!

I'm not too sure about my choice of fabrics, but I enjoyed the simplicity of handstitching and will try and finish them soon. The applique at the top was inspired by a painting (below) I started a while ago and didn't finish!- typical

I also experimented with some machine embroidery which was quite difficult to control!

I was quite happy with my garden fairy though!

My next bit of creativity is to make some more shaped dolls with felt, I'll keep you posted!

I can't believe it's been over a month since I wrote anything. I remember Easter, garden, kids, it's all a bit of a blur! I thought I'd post a couple of pics of the garden that will hopefully inspire something creative!

I loved the sun shining through the leaves.

My favourite thing has to be seeds when they first grow.

I have been watching the 'Edible Garden' with Alys Fowler on BBC 2 which has been nice and basic just right for me! It has rekindled my interest in chickens so I'll keep you posted.

On the creative front, I have been doing some embroidery/ applique I'll take some pics soon, I like the work of Janet Bolton for its simplicity, and I have also looked at the work of the painter Ann Rothenstein which is fab.

Vintage lace and peg dolls.

I have been getting a few bits ready to start at the local country market. I aim to get my food certificate soon and sell my cakes too, but till then I've got crafts to take. I eventually got round to sorting through some old lace I bought recently.

The lace included some (I think victorian) knickers, which

are falling apart so I wanted to photograph them for posterity.

I love the lace, and the tiny handmade button.

I also found my fragments of a 1920s dress which also needed photographing before they fall apart.

I love old beads, and these have a shell like lustre.

For a few years, all the fragments my magpie tendencies have amassed have been used in jewellery and dolls. I am making some peg dolls from the lace and old buttons.

Going through my 'bits tins' I found a charm bracelet I made years ago and some charms from my childhood.(Anyone old enough to remember 'Jackie' magazine may remember the palm tree charm!)

I'll put some new peg dolls on my Folksy shop soon. Bye for now!

I did (luckily) make the most of the sun a few days ago and got out in the garden to dig a bigger veg plot. I get very enthusiastic about spring, and love growing veg and flowers. Unfortunately this tails off in the summer when the watering cans are needed. So I intend making this year better- I say the same each spring.

A little bit makeshift, but who cares! I used to have smaller beds which became impractical.

I have had a little time recently working on some more dolls. I was trying initially to make a purse - to save money ha ha.I soon discovered it didn't work and got very soggy in the rain. I did however like the way of working, so I tried it out on a doll.(I did give in and buy a purse)

I have a little someones birthday coming up so I'm off to check out some sites for non rocket fuel food -as if.

I have had a few days off to clean up the house. Where does all the clutter and rubbish come from? Oh yes two children, a dog and a D.I.Y.ing husband (in no particular order) Anyway, I have eventually put my new work onto Folksy. I have been working on some patterns for dolls that are slowly turning into cushions i.e. they are getting wider. I am also trying to find some lighter colour fabrics which remind me of spring / summer colours.

This doll was also inspired by the black and white of the cornish flag- without being too nationalistic!

I have also tried to make a few bits for a little persons birthday. I'm going to make the most of her wanting bits I've made, before it's too late!

I have been busy making some more dolls and some new brooches. It takes me ages to find fabrics that -to my eyes-go together, so some dolls remain unfinished for ages. Here are some that are!

The one in the middle was inspired by the black and white of the cornwall flag. The other two are inspired by folky images.

I loved the shape of the oeuf brooches that I made for easter, and I echoed it in these little pieces. I have got lots of still life pictures I have sketched and collaged in the past to use. Watch this space!

I must firstly say thankyou to Birgitta at http://birgittadesignz.blogspot.com/ for awarding me the sunshine award! I will pass it on in the coming days. It was a great opportunity to see some other blogs.

I have found some great blogs over time and they really do inspire me to keep going.

Speaking of keeping going. I am still working on the dolls and I am experimenting with the idea of animal heads on dolls - inspired by various stories or fairy tales. My first try is a cat, inspired by Elizabeth Arden cat candles.

I had already done a couple of painted versions, which have been sewn onto various bodies and then cut off (how cruel) because they didn't work.

I'm going to carry on with these -amongst other jobs!

I finished my folk inspired dolls, and have put two onto Folksy,I'm keeping one as a memory doll as it uses fabric from one of my mum and dads wedding gifts - a breakfast set with chicken placemats. All I had was the fabric and I wasn't sure what they were for, however, during some research I found a set in its original packaging!

I also redid some photos of my french oeufs brooches and put them onto Folksy too.I thought I'd show the original inspiration for the brooch and my new chicken brooch which is on its way too.

The hooks are from France (obviously!) and I love their naive quality.

I can also see lots of new inspiration in my kitchen- watch this space.

I am still waiting for some vintage fabrics and lace to use in the postcard pictures.In the meantime I have been working on my folk inspired 'memory' dolls. I wanted to use retro style i.e. old fabric! so I could get more unplanned results, and I am really pleased with how they have come out.

I wasn't sure about the hair, so I went back to my inspiration pictures of ladies in various costumes and redid the hair in felt.

The other things I have been doing are felt badges for easter. I like to try and make something for the children so that it isn't all chocolate. Although we do get through a fair bit of it!

Plus a bit of French inspiration.

I am going to put these onto Folksy in a mo seeing as the shops have had easter eggs for ages already!

Collages.

I am working on a series of collages using collections of fabric, postcards, photos and buttons.

Some time ago I looked at Julie Arkell collage pieces, and love the way they give special significance to objects cards etc especially when they are hung on the wall.

I had recently made a collage using a robin card, left by the previous owner of our house. I wanted to, as in Arkells work, give it new meaning, and be able to see it - reminding me of the owner who is a lovely elderly lady who we still see for old fashioned tea!

I then waded through some photos and postcards to choose some more!

Then needed to sort into styles.

Brights and more quirky ladies. I especially like the birds.

I have just finished two collages from the childrens postcards, which are now on Folksy. Again, a while ago I had made a collage for our bedroom and I wanted the same feel for these new ones.

Above is a section of our bedroom one, and below is one of the new collages.

I'm quite pleased with them, and even with a bad cold I'm really keen to start on the others and then get round to collaging very special photos of mine which otherwise will stay in the cupboard.

Just a little post with a couple of pics. Firstly one of my favourite ceramics jar sets, and a couple of pics of my previous work in knit design.

The print above is by a very good friend of mine, who I hope will be joining the internet world soon?!!

The jars were made in Sweden.

I used to design knitted swatches, some of which were turned into various things including my children's stockings.

I must at some stage get back to doing some knitting!

I was bought up with regular visits to Brighton's 'Dolls in Wonderland Museum' and trips to antique and junk shops.My mum loved old bears, neglected dolls and curious things. So consequently I love these things too. I also love the childlike quality of Julie Arkell's work. She seems to have an organised studio space with lots and lots of different materials. I'd love to have the amount of shelves she has, as it would be a good excuse to buy more stuff! All to use in work of course. I thought I'd share some of my 'little people' too, that are dotted around our house.

I know she needs a new hairstyle- I'm still thinking!

I have been working on a new doll to represent a mother and a child. I was influenced by the doll maker Mimi Kirchner who uses a lot of felt and vintage fabrics. I particularly like the idea of images on my dolls dresses or body shapes. I have had a go using painted calico for the head and legs which looked better than my first attempt in felt.

Also thought I'd show you the calico rocking horse in progress.The rabbit is nearly finished, it just needs a little cute face.

I'd better get busy!

I am really enjoying working with felt, and I am making some felt brooches ready for easter! I ordered felt from Feltgirl.I like not having to finish edges, and being able to embroider directly on to each piece. I have also been working on a calico rocking horse and a rabbit which sits on it.The rabbit is going to wear a little vintage tutu, so hopefully when it is finished I'll be putting it onto Folksy. I have also been busy making some valentine hands which can be used as a keepsake gift to someone special. When I designed them I also thought of them representing a creative hand, a good keepsake for other crafty people.

I have at last entered the modern age, and this is my first blog! I finally decided to get on the web because I have had so much inspiration from other people, that it was about time to give something back. At the risk of sounding like the oscars, I must thank my friend Kirsty of sixtyonea, who makes wonderful beach inspired things, as she has helped me out, and provided a listening ear! The other blog that has been inspiring is Cathy Cullis who reminds me how wonderful it is to create things! Lastly a big kiss to my hubby and kiddies who make everything I do- worth doing.

I want this blog to be a record of my work and inspiration.

So to work! Here are a few of the projects I have on the go at the moment.

These are my cornish fairys. They are based on old fashioned circus ladies with stripey (cornish) blue tights.

I like to work through an idea in several different media and have also tried my 'ladies' in papier mache.
